NYUM___: DIGITAL DREAMS FROM THE UNDERGROUND
There is something wonderfully otherworldly about the visual universe of nyum___. It feels as though someone has taken the slightly chaotic, hyperactive energy of the internet and turned it into an art form. Colours, characters, textures and strange digital environments seem to exist in a constant state of movement, creating imagery that feels simultaneously futuristic, nostalgic and completely detached from reality. And that is exactly what makes the work so exciting.
Nyum___ sits within the visual side of a particularly fascinating corner of contemporary electronic culture — the part of the underground where music, graphic design, digital art, nightlife and online identity have completely blurred into one another. Their work has appeared across releases and promotional worlds connected to Berlin's experimental electronic scene, including artwork for Soul Feeder projects and music by artists such as DJ GHEPARD. There is a real understanding of music as something visual running through it.
The imagery doesn't simply accompany the sound. It feels as though it belongs to the same strange universe. You can imagine these visuals flashing across a screen at three in the morning while something impossibly fast and euphoric is being played through a warehouse sound system.
That relationship with electronic music is particularly apparent in the work surrounding Soul Feeder, a Berlin-based label and collective that has spent years creating a home for experimental, genre-fluid artists and post-internet culture. Nyum___ has contributed flyers and artwork to that world, meaning their images become part of the identity of the nights, releases and artists themselves. What I love most is that the work doesn't feel overly polished.
There is a delicious sense of digital excess to it. Things can feel cute and unsettling at the same time; futuristic one second and almost cyber-nostalgic the next. It embraces the strange visual language of contemporary internet culture rather than trying to make it respectable.
And that feels important.
We are living through a moment when digital aesthetics are becoming their own visual language. Avatars, virtual spaces, gaming references, hyperpop imagery, club graphics and online identities are no longer separate worlds. They are simply part of how a new generation experiences culture. Nyum___ seems completely at home inside that collision.
There is also something wonderfully anonymous and mysterious about the visual identity. Rather than making everything about the artist, the imagery becomes its own environment — something you can enter, explore and interpret. It feels like a visual soundtrack. A little strange. A little euphoric. A little dark. And completely internet-born.
Perhaps that's why nyum___ feels so perfectly suited to the underground electronic scene: the work doesn't try to illustrate the future.
