Chris Cringe has found a wonderfully simple premise and somehow managed to squeeze an extraordinary amount of comedy out of it: “Straight, Gay, or Bi?” The genius is in how seriously he treats something that is, fundamentally, completely ridiculous.
Scrolling through his feed, you’ll find Chris attempting to categorise absolutely everything — from Disney princes and dogs to boy bands, celebrities, perfume and even the slightly more questionable corners of popular culture. The format is instantly recognisable: Chris appears on screen, makes his case, and then proceeds to dissect the subject with the confidence of a man conducting the world’s least necessary scientific study. And somehow, we are completely invested.
The Disney Princes edition is a perfect example. A character who exists in an animated universe suddenly becomes the subject of an intense sexuality investigation. Then there are the dogs, where Chris somehow manages to maintain the same level of seriousness despite the obvious absurdity of trying to determine whether a fictionalised canine has a particular sexual orientation. That commitment is the joke.
Chris never seems to wink too hard at the audience. He allows the premise to breathe, builds his argument and lets the ridiculousness gradually reveal itself. It gives the videos a wonderfully deadpan quality, while his facial expressions and delivery add another layer of comedy.
The result feels almost like a parody of those endlessly confident internet explainers — except Chris is using that format to investigate things that absolutely do not require investigating. And the audience clearly can’t get enough. The numbers on the feed tell their own story, with the Disney Princes video alone sitting around the million-view mark in the account snapshot. The concept is instantly shareable because everyone understands the question, even if absolutely nobody agrees on the answer.
There is also something rather clever about the way Chris plays with gay culture and the language surrounding sexuality. The videos are camp without becoming inaccessible, silly without being mean-spirited, and knowingly obsessed with the endless ways people try to categorise attraction. He has effectively turned gaydar into a comedy genre. And now the idea has even moved beyond short-form video: Straight, Gay, or Bi was released as a Chris Cringe track in June 2026, giving the joke a life beyond Instagram.
That evolution feels completely appropriate. Chris has created a format with its own vocabulary, rhythm and personality — one that you can recognise within seconds. Perhaps that’s the real appeal of Chris Cringe. He’s not trying to give us answers. He’s giving us increasingly ridiculous questions. And then, with a completely straight face, convincing us that we desperately need to know.
